Abstract

With the level of development of human life, an understanding of culture also provides an understanding that the communication that is carried out only uses hand signs and signals and does not use words. This communication is then called non-verbal communication. The traditions and culture that exist in Javanese society can be used as a means of binding and strengthening Javanese people, both with different social status or religions and beliefs. The tolerance that appears between them can be seen at certain moments such as ceremonies or celebrations with religious nuances. Over time, the tradition that still smells of Hinduism and Buddhism has now undergone a change in its implementation, which was pioneered by Wali Songo. One of them that has changed is the tingkeban tradition into a local Islamic tradition. The tingkeban tradition is carried out with the aim of praying for the mother and baby in the womb to be born smoothly and healthy. This article discusses the meaning of the Tingkeban tradition in Lumajang. The theory in this study is semiotics. This study uses a qualitative method with the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Pierce. The purpose of this research is to describe the meaning that exists in the Tingkeban tradition.
